Mary Lou Mackebee, 82, of Ashland, passed from this life on Saturday, Nov. 24 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
She was born Dec. 24, 1929, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Virgil Martin and Myrtle Evans Martin.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack R. Mackebee; two brothers, Harry Robert Bob Martin and Walter Vernon Martin; two sisters, Lois Bench Brumfield and Irene Robinette; four brothers-in-law, Howard D. Robinette, William Bench, Carl Brumfield and Edward Shimfessel; a sister-in-law, Sue Martin; and a nephew, John David Robinette.
Mary Lou, a 1948 graduate of Ashland High School, had a 39 year career with General Telephone Co., retiring as secretary to the general manager in 1987. During her retirement years, she served as a docent at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center and was heavily involved with her church, Beech Street Christian, where she was a lifelong member. Through the years, she was very active in the Ladies Fellowship, the Progressive Sunday school class and the adult choir.
Surviving are a brother, William E. Bill Martin and his wife, Phyllis, of Ashland; a sister, Betty Shimfessel of Ashland; a sister-in-law, Patsy Ward of Bar Harbor, Maine; a very special friend, Donald M. Clark of Ashland and his children; and several nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland, with Pastor Kenneth Vaughn officiating, assisted by Community Hospice Chaplain Randy Tate. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.
