James Michael "Mick"/"Jim" Brown, 69, of Ashland, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
He was born June 12, 1944, in Boyd County, a son of the late Edgar Brown Jr. and Ethel Porter Brown.
Mick was employed with Windstream and spent 47 years being a "telephone man", enjoying nature and the outdoors, living life to its fullest and being with his family and many friends. He was a Kentucky colonel and a member of the BPO Elks Lodge 350 of Ashland and Clarence Fields American Legion Post 76. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Columbus CG-12 during the Vietnam War, receiving the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal/Ribbon. Mick loved his community and state and was an avid Tomcat and Wildcat fan. He attended Wildwood First Church of God. Mick dearly loved his church family and listening to the old hymns.
He is survived by his wife and soul mate, Bonnie Gillum Brown; two children, Jerri Lynn (Larry) Hazlett and Timothy Michael (Jennifer) Brown; and two granddaughters, Tristan Leigh Hazlett and Victoria "Tori" Jean Brown, who were the lights of his life. He is also survived by three brothers, Edgar Marion (Betty) Brown, Richard Allen Brown and Gerald David Brown; two sisters, Linda Elizabeth Brown and Rebecca Ann (Willis) Boyd; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mick was a beloved husband, father and grandfather who loved and cared and provided for his family and friends all of his life. Those who knew him often said they were "blessed" to have known him. He will be truly missed by his family and many, many friends.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Wildwood First Church of God, 3500 S. 29th St., by Pastor Steve Harris. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland, with military honors by the U.S. Navy and Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
