Harold R. (Major) Hershberger, 79, of Ashland, KentucKy., died Nov. 29, 2002 at King's Daughters Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 25, 1923 in Akron, Ohio, the son of the late John Walter and Florence Harper Hershberger.
He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1966.
Following his military service, he became the senior instructor for the Army ROTC program at Paul G. Blazer High School. After 10 years of teaching, he was employed at Sears as service manager for the Ashland store and retired in 1988.
He was exalted ruler of BPOE Lodge #350 in 1982 and 1990; twice past president of the PER Club and district deputy grand exalted ruler 1995-96. He was a member of Poage Lodge #325 F&AM, Scottish Rite, El Hasa Shrine, Jesters, Oriental Band, Rotary Club of Ashland, VFW and Clarence Fields Post #76 of the American Legion, member of Poage Men's Sunday School class at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Betty Miller Hershberger; a daughter, Ann Hershberger Nestor of Cox's Mill, W.Va.; two sons, John Hershberger of Lake Forest, Ill., and James Hershberger of Ashland; five grandchildren, Andrea Nestor Falk of Jacksonsville, Fla., Paul Nestor of Weston, W. Va., Kyle and Colin Hershberger of Ashland and Katie Hershberger of Lake Forest, Ill.; a sister, Juanita Hershberger Leese of Ridgely, W. Va.; and a brother, George Hershberger of Blackfoot, Idaho.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Steen Funeral Home, Ashland. There will be an Elks service at 7:30 Monday.
