ASHLAND
Harry Nicholson Sr.
1906-2003
Harry Boone Nicholson Sr., born in 1906, a son of George Harrison Nicholson and Margaret Sullivan, died April 6, in Fort Thomas, Ky., at the age of 96.
He was the 4th generation of his family to live in Ashland, Ky. His great-grandfather, Harrison Boone Nicholson, moved to Ashland from Maysville, Ky., in 1854, to start a brick plant. He was very proud of his Scotch-Irish-Kentucky heritage and was a descendant of Jacob Boone, Daniel's first cousin.
Harry was valedictorian of the Holy Family High School Class of 1924. He graduated from the Business School that same year. He had scholarships to Notre Dame and Xavier Universities. He went to work at the American Rolling Mill Co. in 1924 to earn enough to accept the scholarships. He retired 47 years later from Armco Inc., after having been an assistant vice president at the Middletown, Ohio, headquarters office and general manager of the Ashland Works. He was also a graduate of the Columbia School of Business Executive Training Program in the summer of 1952, while with Armco.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and active in civic and business organizations. He had been president of the Northeastern Kentucky Sportsman's Club and vice president of the statewide League of Kentucky Sportsmen. He served as director of the YMCA, Associated Industries of Kentucky, Landsdowne Mental Health Board, Advisory Board of King's Daughters & Sons Home, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Ashland Chamber of Commerce, and the Third National Bank of Ashland.
Harry served as a lay member of the Long Range & Planning Commission of the Kentucky Bar Association, was a member of American Iron and Steel Institute, president of Bellefonte Country Club, and was the Ashland Jaycees "Boss of the Year" in 1969.
He is survived by four children, Marie Louise Hissam of Ashland, B. Leann Ward of Cold Spring, Ky., Harry Boone Nicholson Jr. of Bemus Point, N.Y., and Pamela Harkins Rose of Wilmington, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Point in 1935; his first wife, Eva Louise Neekamp in 1943; and his second wife, Zeris Ellen Martin in 1996. Besides his parents, two brothers, John Kenneth Nicholson and Dr. George Edward Nicholson, also preceded him in death.
Arrangements are by the Steen Funeral Home-Ashland Chapel. Visitation will be at 1501 Central Ave. from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 11. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 932 Winchester Ave., with burial in Ashland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Advantage Holy Family School Fund, 932 Winchester Ave., Ashland, Ky. 41101 or a charity of your choice.

I was informed the other day of "Big" Harry's death by a friend of mine.
I, of course, informed my mother, Mary Lou Lester, who has been a long time friend of the Nicholson family.
I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the entire family for their loss.
One of my fondest memories growing up in Ashland was visiting the Nicholson family. Over the years I, and my family, have visited Harry and his family many times, and I will always remember how he treated my family. I don't think I have met a more gracious host in my life.
I know I, and my family, will miss him, and over this Easter weekend, I will make a toast to a man that I admired, Harry Boone Nicholson, Sr.
Denny and Fritzi Lester.

Elizabeth and Marie, our sympathy to you both. The past few months have been extremely trying and difficult to say the least. Admire yourself for being so strong to endure. As for Harry, What a life, 96 years and accomplishments too numerous to mention, the Obituary was well written. Find peace in his life for now he is on to the next. Our love and prayers to you both.
David & Rebekah.

Marie and Beth....I want you both to know that your father and grandfather will be remembered. He was surely a great man and I have memories of him dating back to my youth. Most fondly I remember him from the Holy Family HS 2000 Reunion when he was the odlest graduate and I the youngest in attendance. Know that my prayers are with you both and your families. Hi Kathie and Harry,
So very sorry to read about your Dad, Harry. I remember meeting him and thinking he was a great guy. How lucky you were to have him as long as you did, but how sad to lose him!
It was a fascinating obituary in the paper. What an interesting and full life he led!
You must be in Kentucky as I write this getting ready for the funeral. We are thinking of you up here and will remember you and your family on Friday.
We look forward to your return north and hopefully the last remnants of snow will be off the ground by the time you get here.
Love to you both,
Jane and Rolly

Dear Pam and family:
Please accept my condolences and sympathy on your Dad's death. During my years in Ashland and around Bellefonte CC he was a larger than life figure and a man respected by all who knew him.
His obituary did not mention what he really meant to Armco as it used to be, but everyone around Ashland knew. He probably did nearly as much to win WWII as Gen. Geo. Patton.
I am sure that you'all will always treasure his long, full life and the legacy he leaves, both his record and his progeny.
Give Bill H. my best when you speak to him and may God comfort all of you.
Sincerely yours,
Bill Sewell
