Fern Harris Moore
1912-2004
Fern Harris Moore of Ashland, Ky., died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at her residence.
She was born June 29, 1912, in Rowan County, Ky., a daughter of the late Oliver Hayden and Alma Amanda Hollan Harris.
Her husband, Dr. James Everett Moore, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Moore was also preceded in death by one brother, Oliver Hayden Harris, Jr.; and one sister, Hazel Harris May.
Her survivors include a daughter, Malinda Moore Coleman and her husband, Marshall J. Coleman, Jr., of Greenville, S.C.; a son, Dr. John Everett Moore and his wife, Jan Murray Moore, of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Jean Harris Davis, of Chicago, Ill.; and three grandchildren, Davis Moore Coleman of Greenville, John Harris Moore and Hayden Everett Murray Moore, both of Atlanta.
Mrs. Moore was a devoted mother and wife.
She was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Ashland. She also attended the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland and was a long standing member of the Bellefonte Country Club since 1939.
Mrs. Moore was also the only original surviving member of Ashland Women's Investment Club and a member of The Poage DAR and Boyd County Medical Association Women's Auxiliary.
She established two educational scholarships, one in the name of her husband, Dr. James Everett Moore, for residents of Boyd, Lawrence or Greenup counties at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The other scholarship is in the name of her son, Dr. John Everett Moore, at the Citadel, the military college of South Carolina.
She had two years of college at Kentucky Weslyan. She was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and did some post graduate work in English also at UK.
She taught school in Clark County, Ky., and became a professor of education at Pikeville College and was the youngest professor on the Southern Association of college and schools.
A memorial service for Mrs. Moore will be held at noon on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland with Dr. Richard Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the residence.
