James Estill Cleveland Jr.
1915-2004
James Estill Cleveland Jr. died at his home on Friday, May 28, 2004.
He was born Aug. 9, 1915, in Jessamine County, Ky., to Carrie Lorine Shropshire Cleveland and James Estill Cleveland, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Christine Lancaster Cleveland; son, James Estill Cleveland III and his wife, Becky, of Ashland, Ky.; grandson, Dr. James Estill Cleveland IV and his wife, Paige; and granddaughter, Christina Hughes Cleveland.
Mr. Cleveland attended the University of Kentucky where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. During World War II, he joined the Army Air Corps, instructing cadets from the Army Air Corps and the Royal Air Force. During the latter part of the war, he flew "The Hump," a run between Burma and India, across the Himalayas. He won four Battle Stars, the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Award. After the war, he flew for Ashland Inc. until his retirement in 1975.
He was proud of the fact that he was a farmer as well as a pilot. He was awarded the Master Conservation Award from the Woodford County Conservation District. He was a member and former deacon of First Christian Church in Ashland. He was a member of Bellefonte Country Club, The Society of Colonial Wars, and Sons of the Revolution.
Funeral services will be held at Steen Funeral Home-Ashland Chapel at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 1. Burial will be in Georgetown, Ky., Cemetery at 2 p.m. Services will be conducted by the Rev. B. Dinsmore Nisbet.
The family requests no flowers.
