--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mildred Mae Adams Layne, 79, of Kokomo, Ind., formerly of Ashland, Ky., and Pikeville, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Dec. 6, 2004, in Howard Regional Hospital after a long battle with diabetes.

She was born July 3, 1925, in Jenkins, Ky., a daughter of Nathaniel Jackson and Leona Etta (Plummer) Adams. Her mother, Leona, died when she was very young and her father remarried Maxie (Branham) Adams. Mildred grew up in Shelbiana, Marshall's Branch, Burdine and Jenkins, Ky. She graduated from Jenkins High School in 1944 and Miller School of Business in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1945 and then worked as a secretary at Consolidation Coal Co. in Jenkins and Kentucky Power Co. in Pikeville. She met her future husband, Milford Allen Layne, on her first day of work at Kentucky Power. They eloped and were married on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1946, in Middlesboro, Ky., and enjoyed 43 years together until his death in 1989.

Mildred and Milford lived in Pikeville for 26 years before moving to Ashland in 1972. They were members of Rose Hill Baptist Church in Ashland and were former members of First Baptist Church in Pikeville, where they were baptized together, along with their daughter, on Easter Sunday in 1962. Mildred was a devoted wife and mother, a homemaker and a great cook who loved to see people eat and enjoy her wonderful cooking. She loved to travel and visit family and friends and enjoyed sewing, crafts and upholstering furniture with her husband. She was a member of the MAC Club, the Sportsman Club and was a lifetime member of Rebekah Lodge of Ashland.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Susan (Susie) Layne Wallace of Kokomo; two grandsons, Christopher Dale Wallace of Kokomo and Robert Edward Wallace and his wife, Cindy; two great-grandsons, Daniel Robert Wallace and Thomas Christopher Wallace of Rome, Ga.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Phyllis Jean Howard of Riverview, Mich., and William and Glima Beverley of Fountain Valley, Calif.; one brother, Eldred Roberts of Interlachen, Fla.; and five nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and an infant daughter.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Charles Stewart and the Rev. Ronnie Mayes.

Visiting will be tonight from 6 to 9, Dec. 9, 2004, at the funeral home.

There will be a committal service at 2 p.m. Friday at Johnson Memorial Cemetery in Pikeville.

I read the beautiful tribute to your mother in the Ashland paper. Our daughter was married in October and requested a red velvet wedding cake. It brought to mind that your mother's red velvet was the first I'd ever eaten and it was delicious! Love and Prayers, Kay and Barry and Nellie
