Fred Stewart Jr. - 1938-2005

Fred Stewart Jr., born Feb. 26, 1938, in Ashland, Ky., to Ona Riffe Stewart and the late Fred A. Stewart, went to be with the Lord Jesus on Jan. 11, 2005, in King's Daughters Medical Center.
In addition to his father, Fred was preceded in death by a brother, Roy L. Stewart; a nephew, Daryle E. Patrick; and a brother-in-law, Charles H. (June) Ray.
Fred retired from the E&I department of Calgon Carbon Corp. after 25 years of dedication. He was a licensed electrician in the state of Kentucky and the city of Ashland. Fred was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the board of trustees for three years. He was also a member of the Hampton Lodge No. 235 F&AM, the Scottish Rite of Covington, El Hasa Shrine, and the American Legion Post No. 76.
Fred served as a board member of the Summit-Ironville Volunteer Fire Department. He also served his country for eight years as a member of the Kentucky National Guard. Fred was a member of the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation and was a Kentucky colonel.
Fred graduated from Ashland High School in 1956. Being totally committed to the tradition of the Ashland Tomcats, he volunteered 25 years to the Ashland Tomcat Football Program. He donated numerous hours and electrical materials to the construction of the Tomcat Alumni Baseball Field, and was a longtime member of the Ashland Tomcat Boosters Club. He was known as "Mr. Fix-it" around Hatcher Elementary, where he also volunteered his time.
His love for children compelled him to conquer many tasks that could in some way make their future brighter, such as, illuminating the Big Sandy National Little League Baseball Complex and the (old) Ashland Babe Ruth Baseball Fields.
Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Linda Price Stewart; his only child, a daughter, Leslie Stewart McDowell and her husband, Randall; the joy of his life, his grandson, Scott Stewart McDowell, all of Ashland; his mother, Ona Stewart; four sisters, Audrey Ray, Ida (Edward R. "Dick") Patrick, and Betty (Cleo) Scott, all of Ashland, and Peggy (Bill) Heaberlin of Flatwoods, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Elinor Stewart of Bellefonte, Ky.; and a sister/brother-in-law, Barbara and Henry Dyer of Ashland.
Fred leaves behind 13 nephews; six nieces; 33 great-nephews and nieces; five great-great-nephews and nieces; and many great friends whose lives will forever be touched by knowing the kindness and generosity of Fred Stewart. He will be sadly missed.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. William Moore and the Rev. David Gross. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens with military rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93 at the cemetery following the funeral service.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at the funeral home.
There will be a Scottish Rite service at 7 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. by the Hampton Masonic Lodge No. 235 F&AM.

Pallbearers will be Randy and Scott McDowell, Steve Patrick, Bill Heaberlin, Joey Duvall, and Steve Price and honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Dyer, John Dyer, Richard Patrick, Randy Heaberlin, Dave Barber and Josh Frazier.
