--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mr. Gale D. Armstrong, 65, of Little Switzerland, N.C., went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, in Ashland, Ky., with family.

Mr. Armstrong was born on Aug. 9, 1939, in Jackson, Mich., a son of the late Basil Armstrong and Florence Sunderman.

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Carol; two daughters, Lynne Wagenaar and son-in-law James, and Lori Grigg of Shelby, N.C.; one son, Dean Armstrong and daughter-in-law Connie; and five grandchildren, Jessica Wagenaar, Elizabeth Fairchild, Douglas Wagenaar, Amanda Armstrong and Connor Armstrong.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Armstrong; and one sister, Janice Manor.

He is also survived by three brothers, Meredith Armstrong and sister-in-law Marilyn, Noel Armstrong and sister-in-law, Annette, and his twin Dale Armstrong and sister-in-law Shirley; and mother-in-law, Elizabeth Rischar.

Gale was a devoted husband, son, brother, father and grandfather who always put family first regardless of the circumstances. He emulated class and style in every endeavor he pursued. If you met Gale, then you were fortunate to have known such an exceptional human being. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

He served in the military for two years during the Vietnam War as a member of the Honor Guard battalion in Washington, D.C.

Gale and Carol have run the family business, Big Lynn Lodge in Little Switzerland for 16 years. His son Dean and daughter-in-law Connie will maintain the family tradition. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Spruce Pine, N.C., and a member of the Tourism Development Authority in Marion, N.C.

Visitation for friends and family will be from 6 to 8 tonight, Feb. 17, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland.

Donations may be made in Gale's name to the American Cancer Society, 4338 13th St., Ashland, KY 41102.
