With her loving son by her side, Ruth Horton Via, stepped into a new life with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility of Ashland at the age of 88.

Mrs. Via was the daughter of the late Harry Alford and Gertrude Cheap Horton, born to them on June 13, 1916, in Ashland, Ky.

In her younger years, Mrs. Via was employed by the city of Ashland as a clerk and later at Kentucky Power Co., where she would meet her future husband. She was a devoted wife and mother and was a long-time member of the Three Arts Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Continental Dance Club and was a 80-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland.

She is survived by her son, John Horton Via, and his wife, Anita, of Ashland; and a niece, Sue Horton Bishop of Rising Star, Texas.

Besides her father and mother, Mrs. Via was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John H. Via Jr.; and her brother, Harry Bir Horton of Ashland.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland by Dr. Richard Smith. Visiting will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, 1600 Winchester Ave., Ashland, KY 41101 or to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland.
