Samuel Seaton "Sam" Butler, age 79, of Russell, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 3, 2005. He died at home with his family by his side after an extended illness.

He was a kind and gentle patriarch, with a huge heart that poured out love on all around him, especially the young. He will be remembered for the true joy he drew from a life well-lived, and for the depth of his love for friends and family.

Mr. Butler was born in Ashland, Ky., on May 20, 1925. He was the ninth, last-born and only surviving child of the late Robert Jesse and Nancy Jane Turner Butler.

He was a Private First Class in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He retired as a fleet supervisor, retail marketing division for Ashland Oil after 36 years of service and was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mabel Moore Butler; a daughter, Deborah Ann Butler Chittum and her husband, Jack, of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Michael Seaton Butler and his wife, Karla of Cincinnati and Dr. Larry Stephen Butler and his wife, Vicki of Lexington, Ky.; four grandchildren, Traci Butler Long of Houston, Brandi Butler Harris of Jacksonville, Fla., Lauren Butler Millican of Louisville, Ky., and Nathan Butler of Cincinnati; and three great-grandchildren, Audrey, Caleb and Maci Long of Houston.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, by the Rev. Charles Stewart and Dr. Ronnie Mayes at Rose Hill Baptist Church in Ashland. He will lie in state at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Ashland Cemetery.

A military service will be held at the Ashland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel, 1501 Central Ave., tonight, April 4, 2005.

Friends may make contributions to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
