Alvin E. Harman, 78, of Ashland, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, April 26, 2005, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Mr. Harman was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Auxier, Ky., a son of the late Archie Goble and Thula Vaughn Harman.

He was a retired machinist with the CSX Railroad, was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church and American Legion Post 76.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Potter Harman of Ashland; a son, Kenneth E. (Patricia) Harman of Tipp City, Ohio; a daughter, Thula Vaughn Saylors of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Archie Harman of Statesville, N.C., and Dave Harman of Ashland; five sisters, Willa May Dalenburg of Indiana, Sharon Clevenger and Jenny Lou Peterson, both of Florida, Joyce Maines of Alaska and Viva Click of Ashland; four grandchildren, Shannon Mendoza, Bethany Saylors, Zachary Saylors and Jeremy Saylors; and two great-grandchildren, Anna Mendoza and Tyler Mendoza.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Philip Haney and Pastor Dan Russell. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The American Legion Kenova Post No. 93 will conduct military services.

Friends may make contributions to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Please know that God will comfort and sustain you. Psalms 34:18 says that He is near to those broken at heart and saves those crushed in spirit. Please keep His promises close to your heart. I offer my deepest sympathies to your entire family.
