Joe O. Smith, 82, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 12, 1923, in Elkhorn City, Ky., the son of the late George W. and Tommie Ratliff Smith, formerly of Carter County, Ky.

He was a Halzit truck driver with 40 years of service for Ashland Oil, Inc.; was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran; and a member of the Poage Lodge 325 in Ashland.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Riffe Smith of Ashland; two sons, Jack Edward Smith and his wife, Pam, of Ashland, and Mark O. Smith of White House, Tenn.; two daughters, Linda Pennington and her husband, James, of Grayson, Ky., and Debbie Stoddard and her husband, Hudson, of White House, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, Jerry Pennington, Mandy Smith, Russel Stoddard, Shannon Smith, Tommie Frieze, Ross Stoddard, Ryan Stoddard, Jessica Smith and Sarah Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Kenzie Pennington, Alexandra Smith and Reece Pennington.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland with Dr. Harry Thacker officiating. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum in Ashland.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Military services will be provided by VFW Post 8850 of Ironton, Ohio.
