Edward R. Ballard, 76, of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, in Community Hospice Care Center after a brief illness.

Mr. Ballard was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Curtis and Martha Lou Cordle Ballard.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Ballard; a son, Byron Ballard; and a sister, Kathryn Barker.

He was a former masonry contractor, founder and owner of Ponderosa Golf Course and a former supervisor at Pennco.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Rucker Ballard; a son, Tim Ballard of California; a stepson, David B. Jones and his wife, Christy, of Lexington; a daughter, Mindy Mahan, and her husband, Paul, of Virginia; a stepdaughter, Gina, and her husband, Pete Caines, of Catlettsburg; grandchildren Tyler Culp of Ashland and Hannah Stalnaker and her husband, Gabe, of Virginia; stepgranddaughters Meagan Shively and her husband, Brandon, of Portsmouth and Mary Caines of Catlettsburg; stepgrandsons Jud and Will Weaver of Lexington; and a great-grandson, Kaleb Culp of Ashland.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland with Elder Dale Simpson and Pastor Charles Pennington officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at the funeral home.

Friends may make contributions to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

I just wanted to send a word of condolence to Carol and family. I took care of Eddie while he was a patient at OLBH. He was a wonderful patient that I love so much. He will be sadly missed by me and the rest of the staff here.
