John Walter Scholtens (1915-2005)

John Walter Scholtens, 90, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center.

He was born June 10, 1915, in Newport, R.I., a son of the late Jan Scholtens and Gertrude Vander Waal Scholtens.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lenna Childers Scholtens.

He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, retired in 1980 from Kentucky Power Co. with 44 years of service and served in the South Pacific in World War II as a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. He was a member of South Ashland United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Riddle Scholtens; a son, John Richard Scholtens (Kathy) of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Mary Scholtens Floyd (Clark) of Leicester, N.C.; four stepdaughters, Nancy Riddle Burke (Bill) of North Middletown, Ky., Mary Riddle Warnock (Carl) and Kay Riddle Wells (Bob), all of Ashland, and Kim Riddle Gordon (Darryl) of Bethel Park, Pa.; and seven stepgrandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel at 1501 Central Ave., Ashland. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Lance Campbell.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to South Ashland United Methodist Church, 2203 29th St., Ashland, KY 41101.
