Cathryn Long Elkins, 82, passed away Tuesday morning in Bryant's Health Center in Ironton, Ohio, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Elkins was born Oct. 25, 1923, in Clio, Ala., a daughter of the late Thomas W. and Margaret Melinda Easterling Long.
She graduated from Clio High School in Barbour County, Ala., in 1942. She was married on Dec. 31, 1944, to John O. Elkins. At that time, he was staff sergeant in the AAF at Craig Field in Selma, Ala. She and John moved to Ashland, Ky., after he was discharged. She lived there for more than 50 years until moving in with her son's family and then becoming a resident of Bryant's Health Center five years ago.
She worked many years as a sales clerk at Cal Lambert's Shoes and Judy's Clothing Store in Ashland. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church of Ashland, where she was a member of the choir and taught a children's Sunday school class for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, John O. Elkins, who passed away Jan. 14, 1995; by four sisters, Bertha Creel, Willie Wilcox, Lila Reeder and Mary Parrish; and six brothers, George Long, Dade Long, Ellis B. Long, Carlton Long, Frank Long and Bob Long.
Surviving are her son, Jeff Elkins, and daughter-in-law Nancy Bruce Elkins and two granddaughters, Heather Elkins and Melanie Elkins, all of Ironton; three sisters-in-law, Essie Long of Clio, Addie Mae Long of Louisville, Ala., and Hilda Long of Phenix City, Ala.; a brother-in-law, Rupert Parrish of Dothan, Ala.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Bryant's Health Center for the loving care given to her during the past five years.
We also want to thank Community Hospice for all it did during her final days.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Mausoleum.
