David Wayne Hughes (1931-2005)

David Wayne Hughes, 74, of Ashland, Ky., died Dec. 26, 2005, at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. Hughes was born May 15, 1931, in Louisa, Ky., a son of the late Monroe and Katherine Carter Hughes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Michael David Daniels; and a sister, Mary Dale Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was retired from General Motors. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and an active member of the Second Baptist Church.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.

Surviving are his wife, Rita Dinsmoor Daniels Hughes of Ashland; sons, Chris Hughes of Ashland, Scott Hughes of Flatwoods, David Hughes of Louisa, Ky., and Jeff Hughes of Sebring, Fla.; daughters, Shirley DeLong of Louisa, Kathy Hughes of Ashland, and Helen Hughes of Louisa; a stepdaughter, Lara Cole of Durham, N.C.; brothers, Norman Kay Hughes of Louisa, Tim Hughes of Ashland and Clark Hughes of Louisa; sisters, Nell Bussey of Ashland, Sue Sloas of Louisa, Ann Salyer of Louisa, Ellen Greer of Ashland and Jane Mahurin of Terre Haute, Ind.; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Ed Caudill. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Michael David Daniels Memorial Scholarship Fund C/O Foundation for the Tri-State P.O. Box 2096 Ashland, KY 41105-2096; or to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland KY 41101.
