James E. Caines, 84, of Ashland, Ky., died Dec. 26, 2005, in the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, Ky.

Mr. Caines was born March 30, 1921, in Ashland, a son of the late Edward H. and Elizabeth Thompson Caines.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hood Caines; and a sister, Jean Elizabeth Finney, formerly of Lexington.

Mr. Caines, a WWII Army veteran, was an Insurance Underwriter for Western & Southern Life Insurance Company. After retirement, he served as director of the Ashland Senior Center for 27 years.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church for 62 years and a retired member of the Kiwanis Club.

Surviving are a son Mark Caines and his wife, Trudy, of Vine Grove, Ky.; daughters, Janelle Caines Miller and her husband, Pat, of Springfield, Ky., and Marianne Caines Barber and her husband, Darrell, of Lexington; grandsons, Newman Miller of Columbus, Ind., and Harrison Miller of Lexington; granddaughters, Deidre Day of Munfordville, Ky., Leanne Farmer and Paulette Cummings, both of Elizabethtown, Ky.; and 10 great-grandchildren

He is also survived by a special niece, Joell Caines Finney of Lexington.

Friends may make contributions to the Ashland Senior Center, 324 15th St., Ashland, KY 41101; or to the First United Methodist Church, 1800 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at Steen Funeral Home-Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Blanchard Amstutz and the Rev. Donald Young. Entombment will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 tonight, Dec. 29, 2005, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.
