Opal Martin Sparks Click for Condolences      Printable Version 1922 - 2008 Opal Sparks (1922-2008) Opal Martin Sparks, 86, of Ashland, Ky., died Dec. 12, 2008, at her residence. Mrs. Sparks was born Oct. 14, 1922, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Marshall and Rosa Lee Hicks Martin. In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ersel Sparks in 2002; a brother, Laurence Vernon Martin; and two sisters, Laura Wheeler and Thelma Ison. She worked for Clayton Lambert and was a devoted homemaker. She was a member of Ashland Heights Wesleyan Church. Surviving are a son, Larry Sparks and his wife, Jennifer, of Ashland; two daughters, Darlene Sparks and Kathy Charlene Bowling, both of Ashland; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Jonathan Haynes. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at the funeral home. Friends may make contributions to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101. What a great lady. My grandmother and I spent hours on end with Ersel and the kids watching television and eating ice cream. That was back when neighbors were really "neighbors" and Opal was the most special.
