Herbert  Yates, Jr.Herbert Yates Jr. - 1937-2009

Herbert "Boy" Yates Jr., 71, of Ashland, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, in Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

He was born Sept. 13, 1937, in Ashland, son of the late Herbert and June Shelton Yates. Hs wife, Encarnacion Lopez Garcia Yates "Olga," survives.

The retired U.S. Navy veteran was also retired from CSX Railroad, where he worked as a blacksmith at the Raceland Car Shops and as a laborer in Huntington. He was very active for many years in Ashland National Little League and served as an usher for the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. He was a member of American Legion Post 76 in Ashland.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Travis and Jackie Bradley.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Alberto Yates and his wife, Misty, of Ashland; a daughter, Wenda Yates Epperson and her husband, Brian, of Xenia, Ohio; a brother, Donald Yates of Valdosta, Ga.; a sister, Lottie Watts of Ashland; and three grandchildren, Brianna Cornwell, Brenn Epperson and Jeremy Caudill.

Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ashland National Little League, attn. Mike Gregory, 2231 Sellars St., Ashland, KY 41101.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of Mr. Yates at the ballfield joking with Kristen about her ponies.
