Bernice QuallsBernice Ruth Qualls - 1931-2009

Bernice Ruth Qualls, 77, passed away in Kings Daughters Medical Center on May 7, 2009, after an extended illness.

She was born Nov. 18, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Jake and Stella Mae (Conley) Mabery. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Louise Hitchcock, and her brothers, Emerson Ray Mabery and Jake Buddy Mabery, all of Coal Grove, Ohio.

Ruth was a Christian and loved to attend her place of worship, Rose Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member for 40 years. She attended Dawson Bryant School in Ironton and was employed at Wilson Leather Co. for three years. She and her husband purchased and operated Qualls Grocery Store on Eighth Street for 22 years. After leaving the store, she and her husband began purchasing and renovating homes and apartment buildings, to rent or sell, and did so for many years.

Ruth was a good, kind, Christian woman who worked very hard her entire life to care for her husband and her two sons. She had a smile on her face always, even through the pain and suffering of her illness, for her husband, children, grandchildren and her friends.

She had a sweetness and kindness about her that made you to want to be in her presence. She loved her church, her family, her home, the many years she spent in her grocery store, and the many friends that were always welcome into her home, who in turn loved her very much.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Daniel Joseph Qualls; a son, Jay (Patricia) Qualls; grandchildren Jason (Jessica) Qualls and Kathy Qualls; a son, Dean Allen (Paula) Qualls; grandchildren D.J. Qualls and Colleen (Donald) Purcell; great-grandchildren Liam Dean and Dustin (Cortney) Qualls; two great-grandchildren, Delaney Addison and Grayson Coel; a sister, Wilma Price; and many other extended family members who will sadly miss her.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. The funeral will be officiated by the Rev. Jim Yates and the Rev. Charles Stewart. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

I feel so very Blessed to have had such a wonderful mother-in-law who was always more my second mom. She will forever be in my heart and the strength, joy, purpose and appreciation I always gained from her in life will remain with me through eternity. Thank you to all who have expressed your deepest and sincere sympathies; as you knew "Ruth""MaMaw", you knew Love.

Dan, You and Ruth sold me my first home in 1977. I rented from you for a while and was never treated any better by anyone. I will always treasure Ruth's kindness. Although we have not remained close through the years, I have never forgotten you and Ruth. I pray that GOD gives you comfort in this time of loss.

We all loved Ruth. She was a special neighbor and dear friend of Ruth Fairchild. We will all miss her greatly. Our deepest condolences and our apologies for not being able to attend the funeral.
