James Arthur Crisp, 99, of Ashland, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Crisp was born Oct. 14, 1909, in Greenup County, a son of the late Thomas and Cindy Moore Crisp. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Conley Crisp; three brothers, Orville, Alden and Bascom Crisp; and two sisters, Sarah Hutchinson and Ella Mae Rice.

Mr. Crisp was an iron worker since 1942 and a member of Local 769. He was owner and operator of Crisp Dairy treat since 1960, along with his sons, Raymond and Bob, and remained active in the business until two years ago. He was a 1942 charter member of Summit Church of the Nazarene, where he served on the church board for 51 years and as Sunday school superintendent.

Survivors include three sons, Raymond Crisp and his wife, Shirley, Bob Crisp and his wife, Rita, and Don Crisp, all of Ashland; a daughter, Janet Perkins and her husband, Johnny, of Franklin Furnace; two brothers, Edgar Crisp of Ashland and Dennie Crisp and his wife, Nellie, of Ashland; three sisters, Ada Rucker of Ashland, Thelma Jenkins of Dayton and Belva Jennings of Dayton; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special friend, Juanita Pendleton.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Summit Church of the Nazarene by the Rev. Tim Daniels. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel and after 1 p.m. Sunday at the church.

I worked at crisps some years ago and remember Mr. Crisp well. He was the nicest, kindest man you would ever meet or know. Heaven is rejoicing with him there. He will be greatly missed. Prayers to Raymond and Shirley and all the rest of the family.
