Howard T. Purvis, 93, of Kannapolis, N.C., died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, in North East Medical Center in Concord, N.C.
Mr. Purvis was born Sept. 2, 1909, in Ramey, Ky., in Rowan County, a son of the late Thomas L. and Ollie H. Carpenter Purvis. He was also preceded in death by a son, Howard T. Purvis Jr.
He was retired as a meat cutter from Alexander's Market in South Point, Ohio. A U.S. Navy World War II veteran, he was a Baptist and was an honorary Kentucky colonel.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Adkins Puvis of Kannapolis; a son, Paul E. "Bob" Purvis and his wife Donna of Ashland, Ky.; two daughters, Phyllis Ann Coy and her husband Steve of Charlotte, N.C., and Sue Morman of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Paul F. Purvis of Ashland; a special daughter-in-law, Teresa Ludwick of Kannapolis, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, including Jimi Witherspoon, who lived with him; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at the Steen Funeral Home-Ashland Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Charles E. Stewart. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. Military services will be by the Kenova American Legion Post #93.
