Eugene William Carter, age 82, of Gallipolis, died Sunday morning December 1, 2002 at his residence. Born December 3, 1919 in Gallia County, son of the late J. Earl and Marie McElheny Carter. In addition to his parents he was preceded by three sisters: Edith Dewitt, Pearl Anderson, and Dorothy Mae Carter, and by one brother Lawrence Carter.

Eugene was a retired employee of the Gallipolis Developmental Center, retiring in 1976 after 30 years of service. After retiring he wentt to work for the Ohio Valley Bank where he worked until retiring again in 1991. He was a World War II Army Veteran and a member of the First Baptist Church in Gallipolis. He was also a member of the VFW #4464.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Darlene Davis Carter, who he married November 26, 1943 in Gallipolis. Also surviving are two sons: Roger Dean (Barb) Carter of Gallipolis, Don (Karen) Carter of Gallipolis, five grandchildren: Angela, Adam, Ryan, Kerry, and Annie Carter, one great grandchild: Jalen Carter, three sisters: Lucille E. Nelson of Circleville, Helen (Bill) Bay of Lancaster, Mildred (Carl) Benson of Lancaster, two brothers: Wayne (Janet) Carter of Circleville, and Darrell (Mary Ann) Carter of Stoutsville, OH.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday December 5, 2002 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home 810 Second Ave. Gallipolis, with Pastors Archie Conn and Alvis Pollard officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday form 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to either the American Cancer Society or to Holzer Hospice. Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Organizations.
