Ruth E. Thomas, age 96, of Gallipolis, and formerly of Rio Grande, died Sunday January 25, 2004 at the home of her loving caregiver, Kay Tiller. Born October 29, 1907 in Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Laura Tate Thomas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by 2 Brothers: John and Donald Thomas; and by 4 Sisters: Luna Luckey, Ida Thomas, Grace Thomas, and Anne Long.
Ruth graduated from Cheshire High School. After receiving her BA from Ohio University, she later received a MA from the Ohio State University. She continued her studies throughout her life. She taught for fifteen years in the Gallia County Schools, managed the family farm near Cheshire for several years, and later taught in the English Dept. at Rio Grande College for many years. While at the college, she edited or co-edited a literary magazine 'Atwood Review'. She traveled abroad extensively. An author, she had her book 'Flint and Fireflies' as well as numerous poems and articles published. A member and faithful teacher of the adult Sunday School class at Little Kyger Congregational Christian Church, teaching as long as she was able.
She is survived by: Sister in law: Lillian Thomas of Gallipolis; 2 Nieces: Barbara Thomas of Delaware, Ohio, and Cynthia (Michael) Langona of Cheshire; 1 Nephew: Richard Thomas of Rio Grande; 3 Grand Nephews, 2 Grand Nieces, and 1 great grand Nephew.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday January 29, 2004 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home with Rev. Richard Vinson and Rev. Bob Fetty officiating. Burial will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6-8 P.M.
