Jack Harriger Owen, age 79, of Rodney and a life long resident of Gallia County passed away Monday November 8, 2004 at his residence. Born August 19, 1925 in Rodney, to the late Paul R. Owen, who preceded him in 1975 and the late Adrienne H. Kennedy Owen who preceded him in 1987.
Jack began a career in law enforcement, as a deputy sheriff with the Gallia County Sheriff's Department, where he worked for 13 years and attained the rank of Sergeant. In March of 1973 he went to work for the Gallipolis Police Department as a patrolman. On June 30, 1992 he officially retired from the police department and on July 1, 1992, one day after retirement he re-joined the police department as a reserve police officer. Reserve patrolmen serve with full police powers, but on a volunteer basis, which demonstrated his dedication to his profession, the department, and to his community. He received numerous letters of accommodation during his tenure with the Gallipolis Police Department and was the recepient of the Gallia County Gun Club's 'Jim Mills, Lawman of the Year' and the Veterans of Foreign Wars 'Law Enforcement Award' for his years of dedicated service to the citizens of Gallipolis. Prior to his employment with the Gallia County Sheriff's Department, Jack worked on the family farm, and at the family owned gas station, Owen's Gulf station in Rodney, he also formerly worked for Merry's Stone Company.
He is survived by his Former Wife: Betty Owen of Gallipolis; Daughter: Deana (Eddie) Ellis of Gallipolis; 2 Granddaughters: Linda (Joe) White and Lisa Bloomer both of Gallipolis; 4 Great Grandsons; 1 Brother: Joe (Julie) Owen of Gallipolis; 1 Nephew: Joe Owen II of Gallipolis; 1 Niece: Tonya Owen of Gallipolis.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday November 11, 2004 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Alfred Holley officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends amy call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6-9 P.M.
