Lawrence Vilas Unroe, age 83, of Crown City, died Thursday May 5, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, WV. Born December 6, 1921 in Gallia County, he was the son of the late Rev. Ernest Lester Unroe and the late Ruby Lily Cornell Unroe. In addition to his parents he was preceded by his wife Lillian Irene Day Unroe, by a son Terry Unroe, 3 brothers, Malcolm, Ernest Lee, and Johnny Unroe, by 1 sister Hazel Swindler, by a grandson Kevin Shaffer and by a great grandson Ryan Williams.

Vilas was a retired equipment operator for the Gallia County Garage, and prior to working at the county garage, he was a bus diriver for many years for the Gallia County Local Schools. He was a United States Army Veteran having served in World War II. He formerly was a member of the VFW #4464.

He is survived by 14 Children: Bobby (Faye) Unroe of Crown City, Bill (Barbara) Unroe of Crown City, Lawrence (Carolyn) Unroe Jr. of Crown City, Janet Williams of Gallipolis, Charlotte (Richard) Shaffer of Crown City, Charles (Francie) Unroe of Crown City, Wendell (Diane) Unroe of Crown City, Fern (Nelson) Davis of Crown City, Vivkie (Joe) Freeman of Crown City, Phil Unroe of Gallipolis, Debbie (Randy) Halley of Crown City, Pam (Kenny) Williams of Gallipolis, Anita (Steve) Calvert of Gallipolis, and Greg Unroe of Crown City; 32 Grandchildren and 23 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday May 8, 2005 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home with Rev. Bruce Unroe officiating. Burial will follow in Swan Creek Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 6-9 P.M. Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Organizations. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
