Nathaniel McCumber, 83, of Gallipolis, 'Went to live with the Lord' on March 7, 2006 at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born on March 14, 1922 in Gallipolis to the late Harvey and Ruby Wines McCumber. In addition to his parents he was preceded by a sister Martha Buckley, a son Freddie Odell McCumber, and by an infant brother.
He was a Veteran of WWII and had been a POW in Germany for 5 months, he was liberated by the 7th armored division. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in the bombing of the tank he was riding in. He donated serveral WWII mementos to the Museum in Pomeroy, Ohio. He retired from Holzer Medical Center in 1984.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Helen Shamblin McCumber of Gallipolis and by his first wife and mother of his 3 children Virginia Addlesburg of Gallipolis, son Ronnie Nathaniel (Mary) McCumber of Severen, Maryland, and a daughter Sherry McCumber Roberts of Gallipolis; 8 Grandchildren: Terrie E. McCumber, Scotty N. McCumber, Kellie L. Kay, Robert E. Roberts III, Mark H. McCumber, Shawn M. McCumber, Gareth C. McCumber, and Corey S. McCumber; 9 Great Grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. on Friday March 10, 2006 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Alfred Holley and Rev. Dan Lamphier officiating. Burial will follow in Reynolds Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday March 9, 2006 from 5-8 P.M. Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemtery.
