Joseph Charchak, age 84, of Panama City, Florida and formerly of Gallipolis, died Tuesday April 3, 2007 in Panama City. Born August 31, 1922 in Gary, Indiana he was the son of the late John and Barbara Yaros Charchak. In addition to his parents he was preceded by his wife, Ruby Mae Bunce Charchak, by 6 brothers, 2 sisters, and by a step son, Russell D. Wilson. He is survived by 5 step grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A World War II Veteran, he served in the Army Air Corp, 8th Air Force, 44th Bomber Group and was shot down over Germany on March 18, 1944 and became a POW.
His career was spent in law enforcement, and he retired as a Captain from the Lake County, Indiana Sheriffs Dept.
His memberships included, the Lake County Fraternal Order of Police, and VFW Post #4464 in Gallipolis, and the Swiss Internees Association.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM. Tuesday April 10, 2007 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home 810 Second Ave. Gallipolis. Burial will follow in Fulton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon until the time of service.
Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Funeral Detail.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Michaels Byzantine Catholic Church, in Merrillville, Indiana.
