Charles Ray BurchettCharles “Ray” Burchett, 75 of Grayson died Sunday in Hospice Community Center in Ashland. He was born June 12, 1930 in Olive Hill a son of the late James and Vina Whisman Burchett. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge (Poage Lodge) # 325 F.&A.M., Ashland, VFW Post 3705 in Grayson, American Legion Post #138, Olive Hill, The Civil War Trust, National Advisory Council of the U. S. Navy Memorial Foundation, U.S. Naval Institute, Tin Can Sailors Inc., Destroyer Squadron (DesRon) 52, Morehead State University Alumni, Carter Co. Historical & Genealogical Society, Carter Veterans Association where he held capacity of Treasurer.

He served in the U S Navy aboard the destroyer, USS Tingey, during the Korean War, earning the following medals: United Nations, South Korean Presidental Unit Citation, Korea Service with four Battle Stars for participation in various combat operations, including two commando raids during three tours of duty in the Korean War zone, China Service, Good Conduct, National Defense Combat Action Ribbon, and Korean War Service medal issued by the S Korean government 6/25/2005.

He was retired from Ashland Oil Inc. in Ashland and Columbus OH, for 32 years where he was Assistant Credit Manager. He spearheaded the effort for the restoration of the Burchett Cemetery Monument to veterans of all wars.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Adkins Burchett, and two brothers John and Frank Burchett, a sister Barbara Clark and three half brothers James Calhoun, Otho Burchett and Clyde Burchett.

His survivors include:

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday 2:00p.m. at the Malone Funeral Home by the minister Brad Smart. Burial will be in the Burchett Cemetery in Olive Hill. Friends may call Wednesday 6-9 and after 9:00 a.m. Thursday. East Carter Jr. ROTC will be performing military rites at the graveside. Dad has been gone for almost 11 years now. I know he is resting at peace now but he is still missed so much by those who love him. May we meet again in the New World of Jehovah God's Kingdom.
