
Bernard E. ‘Barney’ Wood age 87 of Greenville died Tuesday November 1 2005 at Spectrum Health United Memorial United Campus Greenville. He was born in Grand Rapids MI on May 22 1918 the son of Bernard A. and Helena Stratton Wood.
Barney was a graduate of Greenville High School with the class of 1936. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the US Army Military Police. He was currently the longest serving member of the Greenville Lions Club with 63 years of dedicated service. He served as President 1951-52 and has received many honors from the Lions including Lion of the Year and a honorary life time membership. He also was a Boy Scout leader and scoutmaster. He was a long time member of St. Charles Catholic Church where on May 30, 1940 he married Virginia M. Walker. Barney worked at the former Eureka Lumber Company and retired as a contractor and carpenter in the Greenville area for many years.
He was preceded in death by his sister Elethia Purdy, his brothers Arnold, Jay and his brother Kenneth who was declared missing in action during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife Virginia of Greenville, his sons and wives; Ralph and Cecily of Ellicott City Maryland, James and Gretchen of Greenville and Richard and Shirley of Mason, his grandchildren; Abigail and Michael Pascual, Joshua and Dana Wood, Deborah McCloud, Brian and Lisa Wood, Jennifer Russell, Major Michelle Wood, Paula and Todd Finison and Virginia and Robert Buckley, great grandchildren; Jacob, Linda, Christian, Megan, Jordan, Tayler, Erynne, Riley, Eric and Kevin.
He is also survived by his sisters-in-law; Mary Ellen Wood of Florida and Maxine Wood of Greenville,his brothers-in-law; Lloyd and Marcia Walker and Charles and Sadie Walker of Greenville and Arthur and Faye Walker of Sturgis and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday November 5, 2005 at 10 AM from St. Charles Catholic Church with Father Tom Page as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM with a Rosary prayed at 8:30 at Hurst Funeral Home , Greenville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Charles Catholic Church, Greenville Lions Club, Parkinson’s Foundation or Flat River Historical Society.
