Elmer Andrew Steffensen age 87 of Manistee formerly of Bass Lake Gowen died on Veterans Day , Friday November 11, 2005 at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. He was born in Spencer Township Kent County, Gowen, Mi on March 28, 1918 the son of Walter W. and Ethel R. Corey Steffensen.
Elmer was a veteran of WW II serving in the the US Army. He was wounded in action while serving in France and received the purple heart .He spent 17 months in military hospitals recovering from his wounds. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, The V.F.W. Cleveland-Wolverton Post Greenville and was a life member of the Greenville Masonic Lodge # 96 . He worked for Gibson Refrigerator Co. for 22 years and retired from the US Postal service as a rural mail carrier in Gowen for 18 years. Elmer loved fishing and hunting and spent many years wintering in Florida. He was married in Trufant on September 10, 1939 to Beatrice G. Stafford.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Betty on August 4 1961 and his brother in 1992.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Beatrice of Manistee, his daughters and sons in law, Nancy and Hersey Rogers of Edmore and Carol and Don Cesar of Stanton and his son Richard Steffensen of Lansing, his grandchildren; Steven Lake, Victoria and Brian Woodman, James Lake, Aaron and Lorri Lindsey , Rebecca and Terry Crawford, Courtney Steffensen and Tanya Steffensen, and five great grandchildren and one niece and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday November 16 2005 at 11 AM with Rev. Rolla J. Timmons officiating and Masonic services by Greenville Lodge # 96 . Burial will be in Little Denmark Cemetery, Gowen. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 6-8 PM at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville. Memorial contributions may be given to the Masonic Lodge #96.
