1936 - 2005
 John Russell Chapin age 69 of Greenville died suddenly Wednesday December 21, 2005 in Greenville. He was born in Stanton on July 22, 1936 the son of Russell and Verna Case Chapin. Mr. Chapin was an active member of the Montcalm County Community having served as a County Commissioner, County Treasurer and as Mayor of Stanton. He served in giving back by volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, the Greenville Senior Center serving as Treasurer and on the board of Directors of the Dept. of Human Services. He was a very active member of the Democratic Party serving more than once as a delegate to the National Convention. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Greenville and also a member of the Moose Lodge. John was the owner of Chapin Sales and Service and the former Nissan Car Dealer in Greenville. He married Laura L. Slusher at her parents home in Blanchard on July 15,1961.
She survives along with their children, Robert A. and Yasmine Chapin of Ionia, Tony and Kathy Chapin of Stanton, Cindy and Kirk Hoisington of Sheridan and Tracy Chapin and Todd Vlahas of Greenville, Grandchildren; Seth, Matthew, Jesse, JaQuay, Andrew, Tyler, York, Jordan, Lauren, Clayton, Alaina and Tyree, great grandchildren Travis, Evan and Logan, his brother and wife Stephen and Marilyn Chapin, nephew Chris Chapin and niece, Kimberly and Kevin Greenhoe all of Stanton, His grandson Trevor preceded him in death in 2001. Also surviving are his wife’s family; Doris DeClercq , William and Betty Slusher , Edna Slusher all of Ft. Wayne IN., Phyllis and Max Krouse of Mt. Morris, Mary Jane and Leland Eisenhart of Midland, Dan and Sue Slusher of Zephyr Hills FL, Tom and Sara Lee Slusher of Edmore, Richard and Wendy Slusher of Lansing, John and Marcia Slusher of Madisonville KY and Nancy Campbell of Stanton.
Visitation will be on Monday December 26, 2005 from 10 AM until 2 PM at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville. Funeral services will be at 2 PM Monday with Rev. Jerrold T. Jones officiating. Interment will be later in the Columbarium of First Congregational Church in Greenville. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Congregational Church, Habitat for Humanity or American Diabetes Association.

Dear Laura and Family
We are so sorry for your loss. John was such a great supporter of the 4H Fair and I appreciated his willingness to help the fair board out with the land purchase when I was involved.
It was just a week or two ago I spoke with him in church, I was shocked to learn of his passing.
We are sorry not to be in town for a personal condolence.

I was so sorry to hear about John, he will be missed. I will always remember going to John's car dealership as a kid. I had a great time and I am glad he let Dad bring me. He was a special man.
