
Fred (Bill) Richmond - 83, of Greenville (formerly of Lachine, Michigan) passed away Sunday, July 8, 2007 at Spectrum Health Center in Grand Rapids.
He was born September 13, 1923 to Fred and Theresa (Hansen) Richmond. From early childhood, he worked with his father at their Wayside Grocery until he entered the service.
Bill graduated from Greenville High School in 1941, served in the Army Air Force during WWII, and attended Michigan State University's Psychology Department after the war, earning a Master's Degree with honors.
In 1947, he married Audrey Griffith. Bill and Audrey owned and operated Richmond's Market from 1953 to 1964. He then moved with his family to Traverse City where he was employed with the State of Michigan as a Rehabilitation Counselor for the blind. In 1970, at age 47, he completed a second Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Administration from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois.
He retired from his state job in 1978 and, after traveling, settled in the Alpena area until his recent return to Greenville.
Bill was especially interested in sailing, politics, history, carpentry, the study of herbs, and he had a strong concern for the environment. Bill will be fondly remembered for his knack for story telling and his great sense of humor.
Bill is survived by his wife, Audrey, two daughters, Willow Richmond of Lansing and Jennifer Richmond (Terry Bornemann) of Bellingham, Washington, four grandchildren, Angela Riggs of Greenville, Isaac VanderSchuur of Lansing, Aaron and Elliot Bornemann of Bellingham, Washington, two great-grandchildren, Tanner and Morgan Riggs of Greenville, his sister, Marcia (Lloyd) Walker of Greenville, his brother-in-law, Robert Rasmussen of Grand Rapids, his sister-in-law, Elinor Chipman of Big Rapids, and 18 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Hillary.
A Time of Remembering and visiting with the Richmond Family is planned for Saturday, July 14th at Hurst Funeral Home in Greenville from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. followed by refreshments at the Greenville Community Center.
