Austin Roderick Hammer Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1991 - 2007

Austin Roderick Hammer, beloved son of Bert and Missy Hammer, brother to Randi and Cody Hammer, Katie Persons, Luke Griffith, grandson to Dorothy Campbell and Diane Hammer, nephew, cousin and friend to many more, passed to glory surrounded by love.

During Austin’s 16 years amongst us, he enjoyed many interests. A self-proclaimed “gearhead” – Austin learned this craft from his maternal grandfather. Austin also made and created models of Mustangs and “Hot Rods”. He was an avid NASCAR (#8) fanamatic. Austin proudly rode for the Greenville High School equestrian team. He took to heart the creed of the 4-H Club as a member of the Gowen Highlighters.

Austin was an avid John Deere collector and as he grew so did the size of the collection and tractors. Born 3/16/91, Austin’s favorite verse was John 3:16. Austin had an incredible ability to live his beliefs. Testimony of that is the outpouring of love he received. His ability to laugh and share that gift enhanced many an occasion-“Can you say the alphabet backwards?”

For the past year, Austin valiantly fought a battle with leukemia and HLH and was a bone marrow transplant recipient. During his 14 month battle, Austin was constantly surrounded by guardian angels from the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital “7 South” team and many special family members who so generously gave of themselves to provide a level of care that surpassed all expectation. Whether you called Austin “son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin or friend” you must call him HERO. He taught all of us a special dignity and love not often found in a sixteen year old young man. When you think of Austin, remember, “ Nothing runs like our Austin”.

He was born in Grand Rapids MI on March 16, 1991 the son of Embert L. Jr. and Melissa Campbell Hammer. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Roderick Campbell on March 14, 1999 and Embert L. Hammer Sr. on August 29,1977 and his uncle Mark Wisman.

His parents Bert and Missy Hammer, brother Cody Hammer and sister Randi Hammer and her fiancé Luke Griffith all of Gowen survive him along with grandmothers Dorothy Campbell of Caledonia , Diane Hammer of Greenville, aunts and uncles, Ellen Campbell of Caledonia, Kathi Ann De Jong of Grand Rapids, Ron and Diane Wisman of Belding, Nicholas Hammer of Sparta , Scott Hammer of Greenville and Lance and Denise Hammer of Gowen and many cousins and great aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held on Monday November 5, 2007 at 1 PM from Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville with Rev. Jerrold T. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Mills Cemetery, Gowen. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Helen DeVos Children’s Pediatrics Oncology Unit

Dear Hammer Family - I met Austin when he was a young boy. I'm friends with a neighbor of yours, and he would be visiting quite often the same time I was. He was very sweet young man. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dearest Hammer Family, I'm so very sorry for the pain you have all gone through. I wish there was something I could say or do. I know it's been a long time since I we have seen one another but that dosn't mean I don't think about you all often. I tried to contact you after I saw your pictures in the paper, but couldn't locate you. I'm still close by and would love to see you. I bought my parents old house on Belding Rd. You probably drive by often please stop by and see me anytime (5831 Belding Rd.) My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Love Crystal Ballard

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. What a blessing Austin must have been to your lives. I can only say that I wish I had known him. What a bright spirit and such amazing faith. God bless your family. Someone Touched by Austin

Austin, you will be missed. I always enjoyed your visits as you were growing up. I always got a kick of the way you would show up at my door and come in just to watch TV. Or the times you would come back with Randi and Cody to ride your bikes around the driveway and take walks through the trails behind the house. Then there was the time Bert and Missy were out of town, Grama was watching you all and the longhorns got loose. Amber and Rob still talk about the adventure we all had rounding up those critters in knee deep snow. Enjoy the peace you have earned after your long fight. You will be missed Austin but your spirit lives on in the stories we will all tell.

He was a wonderful person that I am proud to say I had the honor to know. Bert,Missy,Randi, and Cody, Words cannot explain the heartache we share with you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. At our time of loss a family member told us god only takes the most precious flowers for his garden. And we do believe that. Know he has added one more to it. At this point live life for each minute not each hour. We are there for you all and any minute of the day and we do mean that. We are only a phone call away!!!! Our hearts go out to you all Kurt, Deb, and Amber
