David Thomas Warnshuis Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1956 - 2008

David (Dave) Thomas Warnshuis found peace after a long battle on April 23, 2008.

He was born in Greenville MI the second son of Paul and Dolores Warnshuis of Greenville who survive.

He was always proud to be Mark's "little brother", and reminisced often of happy times they shared. Mark and his wife Cindy and their daughters survive also.

He married Nancy Byrne and together they raised two sons, Darrick Gibbs of Mt. Pleasant, Mich. and Thomas Albert Warnshuis (Carley) of Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1998, he married Ann Kezerle in Lake Ann Michigan and immediately took as his own, her daughters Erin (Jeremy) LaValley of Negaunee and Elizabeth (Matthew) Turek of Kingsley, Mich. He was proud of all his children and adored his grandchildren Croix John LaValley and Sylvie Christine LaValley.

Dave's passion was people and he loved to write about them and for them. He was an award winning playwright and editorial/sports writer for the Iron Mountain Daily News.

Besides writing the story of sports, he also took time to umpire numerous baseball games and basketball games over the years. He always believed everybody has a story to tell, and made it a point to take time to get to know the students and other individuals he was in contact with. He was a caring, compassionate person who yearned for perfection. He will be deeply and forever missed by his loving family and his dear friends.

For all those that he touched with his words, he would want you to know that he always felt honored to tell your stories, and especially loved the time he spent with the Trojans and the Knights. You gave him so much pleasure.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 30, 10am-1pm at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Crystal Falls. A Memorial Service will be held at 1pm at the Church. Father Dino Silvistrini will officiate.

Also a memorial service will be held in Greenville on Thursday May 1,2008 at 7 PM from the First Congregational Church with Rev. Jerrold T. Jones officiating.

This is an extremely late message -I am sorry to say that we moved from the area and I just found out about David. Our kids went to elementary together - and we often were with Dave and his wife. He was a wonderful man and loving father. Our condolences to the entire family. Wade, Tammy, Erica (Bode) and Travis Hancock

My prayers are with the Warnshuis family during this time of great loss. I got to know Dave and his family in Greenville a little during my time in high school, as I was good friends with his son Darrick. Dave was a very nice and thoughtful person. I'm sure he has had a positive impact on many people's lives, and I'm sure he'll be missed by many.

Dave Warnshuis was part of our "magical neighborhood" growing up in Greenville. He was a little older than the kids I hung out with, but he was always very tolerant and patient with all of us little girls who had crushes on him at one time or another. I remember Dave as being kind hearted and generous of spirit. When we played our own neighborhood version of hide and seek, he was almost apologetic when he found me. Later, when he spent time as an exchange student in Australia, he came home and shared the customs with all of us, and had the whole high school singing "The Australian War Chant" at high school sports events. What a tremendous loss to his loved ones. May his kind spirit live on in his children.

Warnshuis Family - We were very sorry to hear of your loss. We had the pleasure of getting to know Dave over the years through Tom, Odyssey of the Mind and being neighbors on Wildwood. Your will all be in our thoughts and prayers. 2 Corinthians 1:4 "Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

To anyone who will take the time to post a thought, I only ask that your prayers and positive thoughts are with the Warnshuis family and the children that David and I raised, Thomas Warnshuis and Darrick Gibbs. David did have a significant positive, and loving infulence in raising two very wonderful boys. They have both grown into adulthood with grace and presence that would make any parent proud. I know that I am. Remember these two, Paul and Dolores, Mark and Cindy, Katie and Jessica as they embrace they work through the myriad of emotions that each of them will work through in the days, and weeks and months ahead. Remember the goodness and efforts and laughter that David presented in each of our lives. My thoughts to all of you who have taken the time to remember when. Nancy

I was very sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He was a good friend, coach and sidekick for many years. I knew Dave since we began coaching together 15 years ago. He was always one to stress fundamentals and really enjoyed getting the kids ready for games. He also did color commentary for the Yellowjackets football and basketball games with me on WPLB for several years and was always prepared with extensive research and history. He was a real professional and had a great love for sports. I haven't talked to him since he moved north. I'm glad he is finally at peace.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Warnshuis and family, I was so sorry to hear of Dave's death. I didn't know of his struggle, but I am comforted to know he has now found peace in heaven. I fondly remember Dave from GHS Class of 1974 and from the youth group at the United Methodist Church. May God grant all of you His comfort and strength during this difficult time.
