1932 - 2010
On December 3, 2010, the healing so deeply sought for so very long arrived as Shirley Louise (Blumberg) Jensen closed her beautiful blue eyes one final time at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. February 17, 1932, Shirley was born, the second of four children to Cecil and Ella (Lucas) Blumberg in Greenville. Shirley celebrated 60 years of marriage to Sivert P. Jensen on August 11th of this year. They made their home on the same street, in the same house near (in) Greenville for all 60 years. What was once open space and farmland bordering their expansive backyard became Greenville West's Marketplace and Hurst Funeral Home. She thought she lived way out in the country in 1950, but now Taco Bell is almost her next-door neighbor! Shirley worked as a dental assistant for many years, was Deputy Clerk for Eureka Township, and was Grandma Shirley to several fortunate children for whom she babysat, the term she embraced. She was known throughout her neighborhood and family for the best Danish pastries around. This feat was legitimized in an article in the Grand Rapids Press. The recipe was passed down through Sivert's family and is carried on by her daughter and, very soon, by her granddaughter! She loved playing bridge and enjoyed coffee with her neighbors in the day. Summer vacations to Quick Arrow Resort near Curtis, MI brought many wonderful memories and lifelong friends. Shirley was a member of the former Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville, loved her coffee club, was partial to Down Home Family Restaurant (especially for breakfast), and also enjoyed meeting friends at Russ' Restaurant. One of her greatest pleasures was family get togethers at Jan's and at the farm. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Grace Bow and Sue Harper; brothers-in-law, Arlin Bow and Wayne Jensen; and nephew, Nick Bow. In addition to her husband, Sivert, she is survived by a son and his wife, Randy and Barbara Jensen of Trufant and a daughter and her husband, Jan Jensen Cornwell and Robert Cornwell of Greenville. Shirley was so very proud of her much-loved grandchildren and their spouses, Craig and Sabrina Jensen of Carmel, IN, Christian and Carman Jensen of Grand Rapids, and Katrina and James Kreykes of Comstock Park. Three very special great-grandchildren, Zoe, Chase, and Arabella stole her heart completely from the day they each entered the world. Also surviving are her brother, Jerald and Suzanne Blumberg of Colorado; brothers-in-law, Russ Harper of Harvard and Lucas and Donald Jensen of Greenville; and former sister-in-law, Kay Blumberg of Pennsylvania. In addition, Shirley leaves a special friend and niece and her husband, Cheryl and Larry Prosser of Greenville and many more wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins. We, as a family, would have composed this final chapter of our loved one's life much differently if the pen had been held by us. Fortunately, we know the Lord's perfect, creative hand held that pen much more ably than any of us as He comforted and embraced Shirley as she lived and as she passed into His divine presence. Cremation will take place and there will be no funeral services. Inurnment will take place in the spring at Little Denmark Cemetery near Gowen. The family has chosen Settlement Lutheran Church (PO Box 6, Gowen, MI 49326) for anyone wishing to celebrate Shirley's life with a memorial gift.
