Dr. Charles Stevens Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1924 - 2011

Dr. Charles Edson Stevens died Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at his home in Greenville. He was born April 28, 1924 in Jackson, the son of Edson and Gertrude (DeGenaar) Stevens. His studies at Michigan State University were interrupted by four years of service in the United States Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1952. Dr. Stevens served on staff at United Memorial Hospital in Greenville from March 1953 until his retirement in September 1989, providing emergency medicine, surgery, and in the early years, anesthesia. He opened a family practice in Greenville in 1954 and enjoyed delivering babies most of all. He served the Greenville community in innumerable ways, including ten years as either Mayor or city council member, as a hospital Trustee from 1979-1985, and as a member of the Optimist Club and the Masonic Lodge #96. Dr. Stevens was honored with several awards, including a special tribute from the Michigan legislature in recognition of his community leadership. Golf was his hobby, which he played well, qualifying for the Michigan Amateur. On June 24, 1950, he married the former Wilma Springer. His loving wife of nearly 61 years, she survives, along with his three sons, Lee (Barbara), Todd (Bernona), and Mark (Pam); nine grandchildren, Andrew, Paul, Jack, Tim, Marshall, Kevin, Daniel, Brian, and Laura; and brother, Frank Stevens. Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Greenville First United Methodist Church, Rev. Steve Charnley officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the church.

Dr. Stevens was our family doctor. My parents had eight children and my mother suffered the effects of severe polio. I remember him coming to the emergency room to stitch my leg up with his fishing hat still on and me dramatically wailing I did not want to die even if I was poor. He seemed momentarily at a loss and then just shook his head," You're not going to die." My family was always grateful for his intelligent, no nonsense approach and with a family of drama queens he had his patience tried more than once. Thank you.

Wilma and Lee, Todd and Mark and families, We are certainly saddened to hear of "Doc's" death. So many memories--my earliest is babysitting your "boys" at your Luray St. house--Chuck was so proud of his sons; golf with my Dad and brother, Glen and Dave and all the bantering about "shots" missed or made; and kibitzing at the clubhouse of GCC. Hope Dad and Dave are having a great time with him right now up in heaven. Our thoughts are with you each of you.

My sympathies to Wilma, Lee, Todd, Mark and families. I am so sorry for your loss. Doc was a great, great man. Knowing Doc, I'm sure he already has a tee time lined up with Glenn, George and Merle. What a foursome! My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

We would like to extend our condolences to Wilma and all of the Stevens family. We are sorry for your loss and hope you can find comfort in your memories and the memories shared by the people he touched. Dr. Stevens and my father practiced medicine, played golf and shared a close friendship with each other for many years. Glenn is probably giving Charlie a hard time right now for having to wait so long for their next round of golf. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I Knew Dr. Stevens for more then 30 years. He was one of the most intelligent people I have known. But the acuity of his intellilect was over-shadowed be the goodness and depth of his heart. I had morning coffee with him several times a week for 15 years. We discussed everything from the use of words and language to last week's football games. (He was a loyal Spartan; I am a Michigan fan). Most of all, he was my friend and I will miss him.

Dr. Stevens was my doctor for many years before and after I was married. He delivered my first child and would have my second but was on vacation (which was much deserved) but was around for my third. My oldest turned 39yrs. old this year. I will always remember him as a very dedicated doctor and one that gave so much of himself. He will be remembered by many in this community, for years to come, certainly by me. Thank you Dr. Charles Stevens for all you did for me and my family. Sincerely, Linda Christensen
