1929 - 2011
Duane "Chris" Christensen, as in life, fought the good fight until his peaceful death on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at his home surrounded by his wife and children. Born to Gust and Hildur (Haggman) Christensen in his beloved Upper Peninsula on November 19, 1929, his family moved to Lansing in his teen years, where he excelled at sports, making friends, and living life. Upon graduation from Lansing Everett High School, he worked at Oldsmobile until serving his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married his childhood sweetheart, Kay (Prescott), on June 28, 1952, and then began his terrific career with the Lansing Fire Department, serving as an officer until 1974. Hunting, fishing, and being a professional firefighter were his greatest loves after his family. He is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Kay; children, Mike (Cathy) Christensen, Sue (George) Mikulcik, and Scott Christensen; grandchildren, Sarah (Tim) Belcher, Jennifer (James) Mikrut, Chelsea Christensen, and Nicole Christensen; great-grandchildren, Joely Belcher and Skyler and Joseph Mikrut; and sister, Diane (Keith) Harrison. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gale and Reid Christensen. The Christensen family will hold a private memorial celebration at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor to a local hospice organization of your choice would be appreciated.

Dear Kay and family, I was so sad to hear that Duane passed away last week. I will forever remember the great times we had with your family, from playing Hide the Button with your kids grandma Prescott at your house in Lansing when we visited over Christmas, to my sisters and I and you and Duane eating at "Dave's Place" (what's his daughter's name?) on our way to Georgia to see my dad. Duane always had a great story to tell and a gentle smile to offer. I bet Duane and Dad are up there playing euchre right now. Always remember the great times.
Love and hugs to you all.

Awwh, just read in the State Journal about Duane's passing; it brought tears to my eyes. Your family was always so good to me growing up!! Just told Bill yesterday I wanted to go to the cemetery as I can't remember where Auntie Hildur was burried. If you need anything, please let me know. You're in our prayers! Love to you all ... Susie

To Mike and Cathy and the entire Christensen Family, I was saddened to see that your father had passed. Mike had introduced us after Duane had left the fire service and we were painting together, Duane was always such an upbeat and positive person to be around. I enjoyed his sense of humor. Things that I know all of you were blessed to expirenced as a family. Keep one another close, and my thoughts and prayers are with you at your time of loss.

I'm sorry to hear about Chris's passing. I really enjoyed working with Chris at LFD especially in my rookie years. He was a great person with a smile on his face all the time and that laught of his was great.
I remember the time when I had the night watch at sta. 3. When I was ready to hit the bunk, I was unable to find the bed. I looked all over the station and could not find it. After some time I heard some giggling coming from the engine bay. When I checked I found Chris, Rollie and Neal hiding behind the engine. They had placed the bed in the hose tower and hoisted up. That was my first taste of the Dept.. He definitely was a UPer. He is ging to be missed.
I had the greatest respect for Chris!
