1930 - 2011

Beatrice E. DoserBeatrice Doser (Taylor), longtime Edmore resident, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born on Sept. 18th, 1930 on a sheep ranch near Ft. Bridger, Wyoming. She was valedictorian of her high school class, and also the only woman. During her senior year, she taught first grade. She was the first woman to receive a degree in physics at the University of Wyoming. She spent a year studying physics in Leiden, Holland, as a Fullbright Scholar. She later studied at Bryn Mahr College, and worked for General Electric. At General Electric, she met Manfred (Fred) Doser, whom she married in 1955. After living in New York and Southern California, they moved to Edmore in 1962. After moving to Edmore, Bea heard about a study to investigate the feasibility of building a community college in Montcalm County. She volunteered to stuff envelopes, but was instead appointed to chair several sub committees. After the voters approved the founding of MCC, Bea served on the board of trustees, first as treasurer, and later as board chairman. She subsequently served as president of both the Michigan and National Association of Community College Trustees. All told, she served MCC for over 32 years. The Beatrice Doser Building on the MCC campus was named for her. Bea also served as hospital administrator, first to the Tri County Community Hospital in Edmore, and later to the Grant Hospital in Newaygo County. She helped organize the DARN (Doctors are Really Needed) committee which recruited four new doctors to the Edmore area. She was also a president of the Edmore Women's Club, and taught several quilting classes in Michigan and Alaska. In 2006, Bea moved to Albuquerque, NM to be closer to her daughter, Adele, and her family. In Albuquerque she served for a year as president of the local chapter of a society for the deaf and hard of hearing. Beatrice Doser passed away on July 17th, 2011, in Albuquerque, NM. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred. She is survived by her children, Diane, Craig, and Adele; four grandchildren; and her sister, Maryanna. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, July 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Catholic Church, Edmore. Rev. Dominic Tirkey will serve as celebrant, and graveside services will immediately follow at Vinewood Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30. Memorial contributions may be given to the Manfred Doser Scholarship Fund at Montcalm Community College or to the Alzheimer's Association.

Sorry that I can not be with you at the service today. Your Mom was a most caring lady. She and I thoroughly enjoyed our many friends from Japan. My husband, Fred, worked with your Dad for many years in Edmore. May you find peace and many special memories today. God Bless your parents.

Larry's mother, Helen, and Aunt Evelyn knew first-hand the wit and graciousness of your mother as friends. Her accomplishments for our community have touched our generation as graduates of the 60's, our children's generation, and will continue for many generations. As you celebrate her life, you must be so proud of her legacy. We are very grateful for her devotion to our community.

My sympathies to all the family members. I have been blessed to know Mrs. Doser in at least two different roles--as a young person in Edmore-and later through my association with the Montcalm Community College Foundation. She was an exceptional woman, a marvelous role model and a true example of living a life full of purpose and meaning.

Bea was a most impressive woman and an absolute delight to know. When she visited us, she told stories, sang us songs from her childhood and sketched the Alaskan seascape. The visit was too short. Our love and sympathy to her family.
