1936 - 2011
Mr. Robert Morrill Ellis, age 75 of Greenville, died Thursday morning, August 11, 2011 in Grand Rapids. He was born July 20, 1936 in Benton Harbor, the son of Robert and Irene (Morrill) Ellis. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1954 after playing on the school's 1953 state championship basketball team. He then graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1958, where he also played basketball. Mr. Ellis went on to work as an independent insurance agent for many years. On August 1, 1961, he married the former Barbara Holm in Minneapolis, MN, and together they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. She survives, along with their children, Michael Dean Ellis of Cutlerville, Christina (Jeff) Lefor of Greenville, and Matthew A. Ellis of Valparaiso, IN; grandchildren, Kyle, Elizabeth, and Rachel Lefor; and his sister, Connie (Charles) Cook of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Duane Ellis; and sister, Donna Kapp. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Oakwood Christian Reformed Church, 8750 Storey Rd. (M-91), Belding. Rev. Ronald Fynewever will serve as officiant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be given to Oakwood Christian Reformed Church.

Bob and I were roommates and teammates on the varsity basketball team at Kalamazoo College in the late 50's. He was a true gentleman and close friend. After graduation I lived most of my life in California, Oregon and Illinois before returning to Kalamazoo in the early 70's then leaving the area again in the early 90's to travel the U.S. and was in contact with Bob only during annual Alumni weekends. Memories of our college days will live with me forever. My condolences to his family.
