1931 - 2011
Mr. Curtis Cable, aged 80 of Horseshoe Lake, Six Lakes, formerly of Wyoming, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Curtis was born May 10, 1931 to Curtis & Julia (Jenkins) Cable in Wyoming. He attended Rogers High School thru 10th grade, but transferred to South High. He left school early to join the United States Air Force where he served during the Korean Conflict. After returning from military service, he worked for a time at GM and then began a lifelong career of driving trucks for various contruction-related companies, a lumber company and Consumers Power, eventually driving a cement truck for Blauw Redi-Mix, retiring in 1989. In 1959 he married Phyllis VanKampen in Holland, and together they raised their children Barbara, Judy, Curtis and Phillip. Curt coached junior league baseball for many years at Pinery Park in Wyoming with some of his teams playing their way to the Junior League World Series. As a player, he was a member of several fast-pitch softball championship teams and was an avid U of M fan. Curtis will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Phyllis; his children Barbara (Kirk) Doane of Hudsonville, Judy (Bryon) McLaughlin of Lee Summit, MO, Curtis (Laura) Cable of Hudsonville and Phillip Cable of Castro Valley, CA; his eleven grandchildren; his great grandson and his brothers and sisters Elizabeth (Robert) Sanford and Patrick (Linda) McDonald all of Sparta and Lewis (Karen) McDonald and Georgia (Mark) Sommerfeldt, all of Walhalla. Funeral services for Curtis will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 16, 2011 at Hurst Funeral Home in Greenville with Rev. Tim DeShaw officiating. A time of visitation will be held on Thursday at Hurst Funeral Home from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. Memorial contributions may be designated to the World Evangelism Fund. Wyman Funeral and Cremation Services, Scottville, is serving the Cable family.
