John & Diane Shoemaker
Sunday August 25, 2013 at 12:43 PM

We were just talking about Jim & found his obituary. He was a very dear friend and neighbor to Dr. John Shoemaker and his wife Barbara who lived across the street for many years on Tuomy in Ann Arbor. Jim was indeed a very interesting man with a sharp wit who shared many hours with his friends &'neighbors. After Dr Shoemaker died, he looked after Barbara and provided friendship & transportation for years. We remember him fondly.

I'm so sorry to read of Jim's death. I had finally tried to find him after too many years and just got a returned letter from Spring Lake. I am from Greenville (1954), UofM (1958) and our parents were friends.

Tad and Lucy, I just heard this sad news and send to you my deepest sympathy. I know how much you and your family meant to Jim through many hears of friendship -- you were truly a much loved part of his "family." It has been a long since we've been in touch - but I remember with fondness the many parties and dinners at Jim Filgas' home in the 1980s and those great Christmas trees! -- and the many friends he brought together in his home - students, faculty colleagues, neighbors, and others .... always room for one more, always a warm welcome, always a lot of energy and good will! Jim truly enjoyed life -- and I know how much a part of his life you were. I share the sadness of this loss and send you my sympathy, Mame Jackson

Jim and I worked together at the University of Michigan during the 1970's. His work in the admissions office led to better students and a stronger University.

My sincere condolences. Jim was my friend since 1937. I knew his family well and had many dinners at their home throughout our Greenville school years. Over the years I saw him here in San Rafael,in Greenvile, in Ann Arbor and last year in Spring Lake. We had long and often nostalgic conversations. His knowledge of the lives of our friends and acquaintances was extensive and his acerbic wit was marvelous. I shall miss him very much.

Jim had a room next to mine at Zeta Psi Fraternity. He always had a smile for me and that's how I will always remember him.

My condolences to the Welch family. I knew the Professor primarily in the 1980s and 1990s. You were very much the center of his life-all four of you. He spoke of all of you constantly and you saw him through everything. I am sorry for your loss.

Filgas will be missed by all he knew. He never missed a party and made them better with his antics. We will miss Filgas tremendously. God Bless.
