I'm sorry to hear this news. We will miss seeing him standing on the deck with his U of M cap. Dad (Shadow Augustine) always talked highly of Pete, and I'd like to think they'll be golfing together in Heaven with Rod, Joe and all the others from Gibsons. Our thoughts are with your family.

Peter Nicholas Lober passed away at home peacefully with family at his side on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. He was born in Detroit February 2, 1919. He excelled as a young man, including earning the Eagle Scout award with the Boy Scouts of America. Peter was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy from 1937 until 1946. During that time he was assigned to submarine duty in the South Pacific theatre and was awarded numerous citations, including a Presidential Citation and the Silver Star. After the war Peter graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in mechanical engineering. In 1950, Peter joined the Gibson Refrigerator Company in Greenville, Michigan. He held various positions, retiring as Manager of Plant Engineering in 1982. In 1950 Peter married Mary Lou Hieftje of Belding, Michigan. Married for 61 years, they resided outside of Greenville at their country farmstead and raised their three children there. Peter was a life member of the United States Submarine Veterans WWII, and a life member of the American Legion. Peter was also involved in many community activities, including Boy Scouts district leadership, 4-H leadership, and many years of service as President of the Board of Directors of the Gibson Federal Credit Union. Peter was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and a brother. He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Kristine (Dan) Schulz of Ada, Michigan, Katherine Saigeon of Westlake Village, California, and Nicholas (Michele) Lober of Lakeview, Michigan; five grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, January 13, 2012 at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Rev. Philip A. Shangraw will serve as officiant, and military honors will be under the auspices of the Ray I. Booth American Legion Post 101. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Ionia Area Hospice.
