
Fred Johnson, 92, of Greenville passed away Monday March 19, 2012 at the home of his son, Edward J. Johnson.
Born James Frederick Johnson on March 15, 1920 in Ionia, Michigan, the son of Theodore Purl and Viola Fern (Curtis) Johnson, he graduated from Ionia High School in 1938 and attended Davenport Business School.
Fred served in Navy in WWII as a signalman in the Naval Armed Guard, crossing the Atlantic many times to escort convoy ships full of supplies. He participated in the Relief of Malta.
A musician most of his life, Fred played drums in bands continuing from his high school years well into his eighties.
He married Harriet Christensen on June 21,1946. Fred worked at Federal Mogul for 34 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Richard, and his wife Harriet. Surviving are his son Edward and his wife, Beth Ann and his daughter, Jayne, all of Greenville; grandsons, Robert Johnson of Sylvania, OH (wife Beth, children Nielsen and Vivian) and Anthony Johnson of Lake Mary, FL (wife Joan, children Dakota, Logan and Skye).
Visitation is at Hurst Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 7-9 PM and Memorial service at the funeral home at 2 PM Friday with Pastor Betsy Kamphuis officiating.
