1936 - 2012

Ronald Armand Richardson DaviesRonald Armand Richardson Davies died Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. He was born in Tandjenog Enim, Indonesia on May 25, 1936 to Udo Lucien and Froucke Henriette (Fransz) Davies, and as a child witnessed the Japanese occupation of his homeland during World War II. During that time also, his father was captured and taken as a prisoner to Japan. He was a member of the resistance so was treated harshly, but survived to return home at the end of the war. After the war, the family left Indonesia to live in the Netherlands. Ronald served in the Dutch military as a young man. In 1960 he immigrated to America, and made his home in Michigan. He became a U.S. citizen on October 20, 1965 and served honorably in the U.S. Army for several years. Ron continued in the Army reserves after leaving the full time service in the military. In 1970, Ron was hit head on by a drunk driver. The accident left Ron at Butterworth Hospital for four months. He came through the accident and married Freda Mae Forist. They were married 23 years and had three children. Michael, Marlowe, and Jason. Marlowe died shortly after her birth. Ron worked as a corrections officer for many years at the Michigan Dunes Correctional Facility. He retired for medical reasons in 1990. In 1991, Ron and Freda moved to Florida, but divorced in 1994. Ron continued to live in Florida until 2002, then moved back to Michigan and lived in Trufant until his death. He enjoyed soccer, dancing, and playing cards, especially bridge and pinochle. Ron is survived by his sons Michael (LeAnn) and Jason (Tracey) Davies; six grandchildren, Danielle, Trisha, Tyler, Christopher, Tristian, and Jacob, and his brother, Bert Davies of the Netherlands. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, with visitation from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM prior to the funeral. Rev. Todd Dykstra will officiate, and interment will follow in Trufant Cemetery.
