Jean Fordyce Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1941 - 2012

Jean FordyceS. Jean Fordyce age 71 of Greenville passed away Thursday August 2, 2012 at Spectrum Health Meijer Heart Center Grand Rapids. She was born in Greenville, January 18, 1941 the daughter of Freeman H. and Alma V. Hill Fordyce. Jean and her parents and sister were on a summer vacation in California the summer of 1952 when she became ill with poliomyelitis. She returned home 6 months later in an iron lung and slowly recovered becoming wheel chair bound for the next 60 years. She graduated with honors from Greenville High School with the class of 1959, then graduated from Alma College in 1963 and followed with a Masters Degree in Social Work from Michigan State University. As a licensed social worker she was employed at Sparrow Hospital Lansing and then at Rehabilitation Industries in Lansing. After a medical set back with post polio syndrome she retired home to Greenville in 1976. Her parents always encouraged her continued education and help fund other students education when they helped care for Jean. Always requiring a constant care giver, her parents employed many others to keep Jean as independent as possible. In 1971 her mother Alma found a young hospital worker in Sheridan Hospital to become Jeans care giver. Now after 41 years of constant companionship and a life together given with true devotion and love Marian Griffith leaves a wonderful legacy of care giving to Jean. Together they enjoyed many adventures always looking forward to the next, whether it was having friends in for a lovely dinner and cards or traveling or just an evening of friendship or gloating over a MSU victory.

Jean was a member of the First Congregational Church and was privileged to have the care and friendship of a loving church and its Parish Nurse program especially Patrice Peacock and Pastor Jerry. She also was a patron of the Flat River Public Library and its books on CD.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Sharlee Fordyce.

She is survived by her loving companion and care giver Marian Griffith, her sister Barbara (Michael) Hurst of Greenville, her nieces, Kimberly (Christopher) Kenward of Grand Rapids and their daughters and great nieces Emma and Josie, and Michelle (Patrick) Tolliver of Greenville and their sons, Liam and Carson , Jean and Marians great nephews, Jeans cousins and families and Marians mother Florence Griffith of Greenville and her brothers Jim Griffith and Donna of Canada and Robert Griffith of St. Louis MI and their families.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday August 7, 2012 at 11 AM from Hurst Funeral Home with her Pastor, Rev. Dr. Jerrold T. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memory Gardens. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be considered to the First Congregational Church Parish Nurse Fund

Barb & Mike, I just noticed that Jean passed away. So sorry for your loss. She was a special lady. Reading the conolences here brought back a lot of good memories about how strong a person she was. Sounds like she led as full a life as she could given her situation. I've never met Marion but she sounds like a special person, too. I hope she is doing well. Chuck

We would have loved to be there with the family and Marion for the funeral, but are currently in Denver visiting our son. Jean was always very special to us both...she has felt like part both of our own families! We always enjoyed visiting with Jean and Marion when we were back in Greenville. Jean will leave a big hole in Greenville and in the lives of those who loved her!

Dear Barb, Mike & Marian: I am so sad to hear of Jean's passing. I remember knowing back then how lucky I was to live right next door to Barb & Jean on Washington Street - during our "formative years." I will always remember how I loved being invited over to Fordyce's every time Alma made waffles. We all (Jean, Barb, Nancy, Ann & I) have some wonderful memories of our great times together growing up. Jean was always a true inspiration to all of us and she will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and yours. God Bless. Love you, Gret & Jim

Dear Marian, Barb, Mike, Kim and Michelle & families, Jean will be greatly missed by our family as well as yours. Over the past 35 years she and Marian were known by my children as the "other Mothers" especially after the children lost their father. We will also miss the many hours we played cards and went out for dinner. Jean and Marian were true friends and always there in our times of need and more than willing to give us advice when needed. Marian has been a saint in the 41 years she has cared for Jean. It is going to be a great loss for Barb, Mike and the girls as well as Marian. You are all in our prayers.
