Caroline Virginia Newland Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1926 - 2012

Caroline Virginia NewlandCaroline Virginia (Yonker) Newland, age 85 of Gowen, passed away from a broken heart on August 6, 2012 after losing her love Howard eight months ago. Carol was preceded in death by parents Lawrence and Vada Yonker and brothers, Kenneth, Keith, and Pug. She was born December 31, 1926 in Hudsonville, where growing up she worked in the onion and celery fields. She also had a large newspaper route. She graduated from Hudsonville in 1945 and married Howard Newland on June 7, 1947. She then went to work in data processing and on raising family. After she retired, she worked as a bagger at Meijer in Greenville. Spunky and fun are two words that best describe Carol, as she met any challenge that came her way. Through good times and bad she could still laugh- a laugh you couldnt forget. She was fiercely devoted to her family and friends and always put their needs before herself. She was an awesome cook and an extremely talented person, from being a seamstress to arranging flowers. Most recently she joined the West Michigan Quilters Guild and really enjoyed that. She leaves behind those who will cherish and dearly miss her: son, Kim (JoAnne) Newland of Coopersville; daughters, Judy (Sam) Lovett of Gowen, Patty (Dennis Kinney) Newland of Belding, and Tammy (Kevin) McCarthy of Tempe, AZ; grandchildren, Corey Baker, Kimberly (Pat) Burrow, Renaee Newland, and Shawn (Judy) Gilbert; great-grandchildren, Aubrey, April, Alec, Autumn, and Tiffany; and her cats, Selma and Bugsy. Carols family would like to especially thank Buzz and Marry, Pat and Chuck, and Crissy and Mary for everything they did to help. They would also like to thank the team from Hospice of Michigan for their compassionate care in the last few months, which helped to ease the pain and confusion of being alone. Friends and family are invited to meet for a luncheon to celebrate Carol's life Saturday, August 25, 2012 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at the Spencer Township Hall (14960 Meddler Ave. NE, Gowen). Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Michigan.

I wrote a few lines earlier but realized that I should introduce myself as the daughter of Harold/Curly Yonker. He was Lawrence's much younger brother. Lawrence and Vada cared for my dad after he was orphaned in 1919. I remember Vada's pies, the guys hunting, and stories of their farm family. I continue to miss my mom Thelma who passed in July 2009. That is the last time I visited with Carol. May your family have healing in this time of loss.

I just could not stop myself. There is so much more to remember about Mom. Being from a Dutch background I remember how she could wrangle chocolate! Only Mackinac Island fudge comes as close to Mom's no-bake cookies and fudge. She used to set this stuff outside to cool, and it was worth the wait. I remember the huge amounts (I'd say "vats" describe it best)of shrimp salad she would make--I believe that started with Judy's graduation. She drove an orange Lincoln (the "stinkin Lincoln")I rememeber her canning those fabulous green tomatoes, with cauliflower and carrots...de-lish!Oh! And the Sugar Plums and Candy Houses...with Hershey Bar roofs, and peppermint disc stepping stones, and the Graham Cracker door! Mom's sweet side..we were all happy when she cooked!

Dear Sam, Judy, Patty, and Corey--I don't know how I can make it to Michigan to see you, but I am making every effort--Mom was always there for me no matter what anybody else thought of my endeavors; She would see any of my drawings, and always say my work was "cute"--I was trying to be so dramatic with drawings and paintings, but it never changed Mom's view...that was okay with me. Somehow Mom got us to go Vacation Bible School, and my accepting Jesus as my savior was rooted there. Mom watched out for us in prayer at all times, and I know that's how my life was changed. My favorite memory is all the beautiful flowers on Stafford Street in Grand Rapids, and the picnics at John Ball Park, and Mom letting Judy take us to Garfield Park to swim. Yeah, she did have a contagious laugh...I hope that's in my DNA....May all of you share special fellowship and peace together at Mom's memorial service. Sorry I took so long in learning the real values of life, as here I was too late. Love you all, Love you, Mom!
