Mr Diehl was my most favorite teacher at GHS. I was in the honors math class for 3 years and his method of teaching made me love math and set me up for a great career in technology. Condolences to the family. He was a wonderful man!

My sympathies to the family. Mr Diehl was my favorite teacher. My enjoyment of mathematics was a result of his caring and excellent instruction. I ended up with a minor in math and taught it a couple years. I am the daughter of Norbert Schrauben (owner of Rayborn Hardware) so I'm not sure if I know Mrs. Diehl, but your name sounds very familiar.
Your family will be in my prayers.

Here was a teacher who managed to be kind even to the sleeping student to whom he had posed a question in class. Mr. Diehl joined Patricia Byrnes (Lit.), Ed Higby (Chem.), and Marge Highfield (Comp.)as my favorite teachers at GHS. Frank Gibson, 1968.

My deepest sympathy. Mr Diehl was a wonderful math teacher and a great person. I was in his honors math class and graduated in 1964. Due to his skill, I was able to go back to college in my 30's and finish in Computer Science. He not only taught math, he taught how to approach problems in a logical manner. I have been very grateful for his influence in my life.

He was amazing to have survived my driving "skills" the next winter/spring. He was extremely patient and kind. You will be missed Mr. Deihl, God Bless and Rest in Peace.

I now appreciate all he accomplished in the schools as well and know he was loved and respected by so many of us students. Greenville was a better community because of him. Just saw Mark, Brian & Sue at the GR symphony the other night and of course asked about Dick. So sad. Sheila remembers Dick as "Mr. Diehl", her honors math teacher for four years, where everyone sat according to their grades, and once she sat in front of Jim Blinn! I remember Dick as a greatly respected instructor, and also as a friend and fellow teacher for many years at GHS. Our condolences and he certainly provided us with many wonderful memories.

I have not seen Dick Diehl since I left home for college, but I have remembered him fondly all these years. My brother was a math whiz and though I could keep up in class, Mr. Diehl was most kind not to make me feel compared. I remember him as a mild mannered, kind man who was soft spoken and helpful to all students alike and I never heard anything contrary to how well-liked he was. How lucky we were to have a teacher like him. Sincere sympathy to all his family.

I thank you, Mr.Diehl, for a lesson I learned from you my freshman year. After 2 weeks in your Algebra class you kindly took me aside and told me that you thought I would do better in Business Math because Algebra took a logical mind and my mind was wonderfully abstract. Such kindness. I have repeated that story on numerous occasions to explain a lot of things. Thank you for being so many things to so many people. My condolences to family, friends and students.

Mr. Diehl was my teacher in algebra and there was none better. I apparently drove him to distraction with my questions for he told my mother to stop being "argumentative." My non-math brain was just trying to comprehend. But he never held it against me and I revered, respected, and liked him immensely. He was a fan of the Tigers baseball team and when the World Series were on one year he kept us informed (during class) on their progress (or lack of). He was an institution in himself -- a wonderful gift to Greenville.(Class of '61.)

My condolences to the Diehl family. We were neighbors near the school, and he was my favorite high school teacher.
When Mr. Diehl taught me for four straight years in Honors Math, I got to calculus in my senior year and had a hard time. I was doing ok on my homework, but failing my tests. Instead of blaming me for my inability to grasp the concepts, he was frustrated with himself, and asked me what *he* needed to do better to help me. He was that kind of teacher, always willing to spend extra time and go the extra mile when a student needed some help.
Thank you, Mr. Diehl, for everything. You were the best!

Dick was the soul of patience, whether he was teaching math or supervising Saturday morning basketball at Baldwin Heights. I have distinct and deeply fond memories of him leaning over my desk almost every day, probably thinking to himself that he was amazed I could find the correct answer on a math worksheet. I taught for 40 years and just retired and in those years I thought of him often...he was a fine mentor and a marvelous example of what a kind heart and a keen mind can do to make the world a better place. Dick Diehl was a great teacher and a very nice man. I felt privileged to be in the first ever accelerated math class he taught. When it became clear that my interests didn't lie in math, he came to our house to have a conference with my parents and me. He very kindly suggested that I quit the class at the end of the semester. In no way did he ever make me feel like this was a bad thing.
When I became an English teacher in South Haven, it was Dick (along with Les Morford) whom I thought of as a model for what a teacher should be like.
I send my sincere condolences to his family. May you take comfort in knowing how many young lives he touched and improved.

To the Diehl family,
Your treasured husband, father, grandfather (and many great's over) was an icon of excellence in teaching math. Over 50 years ago he was my math teacher at Greenville High and since I am not a math wizard I appreciated his patience and guidance to help me get through the basics--and with an element of fun too! May you all be comforted by your memories of life with him. He is missed by thousands of students that he has taught over his long career. And sorry to say most teachers do not get the first hand thanks and stories of how they have touched lives very often. I expect he did hear from his students and I hope he knew what a great teacher and friend that he was to all. May peace and love be with you during your loss and especially at this holiday season.

Donna,
We all send our sincere sympathy to you. We always enjoyed Dick when he would come into the office, even when he wore his Spartan shirts!

The Jaehnig family was fortunate to know Dick Diehl as a friend, teacher and coach. He was a great asset to Greenville Public Schools and I wouldn't have gotten through Honors Math without him! My sincere condolences to you all.
