1918 - 2012
 Charles James McMellen age 94 of Greenville passed away Thursday December 27, 2012 at home. He was born in Ionia on June 23, 1918 the son of Edgar Joseph and Albertina (Walker) McMellen. He was a graduate of Ionia High School with the class of 1937 and a veteran of WW II serving in the US Navy on ships in the Pacific. Early in his career he owned a restaurant in Fremont MI and then was president of Gilliland Trucking, owner of the Montgomery Ward franchise in Greenville and then he operated Spartan Industrial in Greenville for many years. He was a long time member of the former Greenville Country Club proudly scoring his age in his later years and making a hole in one. He also loved bowling where he had several 300 series. Charlie was a member of the American Legion Post # 101,Greenville. He married Nora E. Knoff Proctor on October 22,1984. He was preceded in death by his brother Leslie McMellen.
He is survived by his wife Nora and his children; David (Cindy) McMellen of Traverse City, Darlene (Dixon) Powers of Dallas, Oregon, Lisa Holmden and Tricia (Mark) Winters both of Greenville, Tamara (Roger) Wenk of Battle Creek and Mary Proctor of Grand Rapids, grandchildren; Matt, Melissa, Chelsea, Jeff, Andrew, Alex, Casey, Spencer, Dustin, Chelsea, Allison, Daniel, John, Jordon and Rachel, two great grandchildren, his sister Marjorie Abbot of Battle Creek, brother-in-law, Donald Knoff of West Liberty, OH, sisters-in-law, Mary Ruth (Leland) Tuttle of Bellefontaine OH and Phyllis Hartzler of West Liberty,OH.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday December 30, 2012 at 3 PM at Hurst Funeral Home with Rev. Aaron I. Sorrels officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior at 2 PM. To all of Charlie's family I am sure he will be missed most by all of you. Hopefully you will find comfort in all of the warm memories that the community shares with you. Nora, I was fortunate to meet Charlie through you and was so delighted in how the two of you would just light up when you looked at one another. Tricia, Kimmee, Steph, and I extend condolences to you and your family. We hope that positive memories will be abundant.

Nora and family,
I want to tell you how much my late father Glen Keith Tanner enjoyed knowing Charlie and playing golf with him. I see from the life history that he graduated from Ionia High School two years before my parents (Keith and Margaret Stedman Tanner). I suspect they first knew of each other then. My late brother Dave Tanner undoubtedly also played golf with him at Greenville Country Club and my sister Holly, another golfer, knew him as well. Many good memories from those days. I am greatly saddened by the loss of Charlie.
He was a great friend; as well as, a doting
husband, father, and grandfather. I send my
condolences to the family. His loss will leave
a gaping hole in their lives. I am currently visiting in the Seattle area and will not be able to attend the visitation or funeral, but
rest assured I will be there in spirit.

I will always remember him coming into Jorgensen's and giving me a "hard" time with that twinkle in his eye and still after those years, he would still do that whenever we would see each other.
